New here? A "beat lease" means you're buying a licence to record and release music over a beat — not the beat itself. The Producer keeps the copyright. Think of it like renting a location for a film shoot: you use it, you credit it, but you don't own the building. Exclusive rights are the exception — they transfer the beat fully to you.

Credit Requirements

For all non-exclusive licences, you must credit the producer as follows:

  • Streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) — include "Prod. Placidchills" in the track title or in the credits field of your distribution platform
  • YouTube / social media — include "Prod. Placidchills" in the video title or description
  • Physical releases — include "Produced by Placidchills" in liner notes

Failure to credit may result in termination of your licence without refund.

What You Cannot Do (All Tiers)

  • Resell or sublicense — You cannot sell, give, or transfer your licence to another artist or entity
  • Claim production credit — You cannot claim to have produced the beat or register it as your own composition with any PRO (IPRS, BMI, ASCAP, etc.)
  • Use before purchase — Using a beat (including in a released or publicly uploaded track) before completing a purchase is copyright infringement
  • Strip or alter credits — You cannot remove Placidchills' metadata from any delivered file
  • Exceed tier limits — If your streams or sales exceed your tier's limits, you must upgrade your licence before continuing distribution

What Happens When a Non-Exclusive Beat Gets Sold Exclusively?

If you hold a valid non-exclusive lease and the same beat is later purchased exclusively by another artist, your existing lease remains valid for the remainder of its term. Your right to continue distributing your released track is protected. However, the beat will no longer be available in the store and new licences cannot be issued.

Upgrading Your Licence

If your release grows beyond your tier limits, you can upgrade at any time. The upgrade price is the difference between your current tier and the new tier (not the full price of the new tier). Contact us to arrange an upgrade before your limits are exceeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a leased beat on Spotify and Apple Music?
Yes. All tiers allow streaming distribution. MP3 lease allows up to 100,000 streams, WAV up to 500,000, Stems unlimited.
Do I need a WAV or can I release with the MP3?
Most distribution platforms (DistroKid, TuneCore, etc.) require WAV quality for streaming. The MP3 lease is fine for SoundCloud, YouTube, and mixtapes. If you're releasing on Spotify or Apple Music professionally, the WAV lease is recommended.
What do I write in the credits?
Write exactly: Prod. Placidchills — in the song title (e.g. "Song Name (Prod. Placidchills)"), or in the description/credits field of your distribution platform and YouTube upload.
Can I use a leased beat in a music video?
Yes. MP3 and WAV leases allow one official music video each. Stems and Exclusive leases allow unlimited music videos.
Can I use the beat for a film or advertisement?
No — TV, film, advertisement, and sync use requires Exclusive Rights. Contact us to discuss pricing for sync licensing.
What if my song blows up and I exceed the stream limit?
Congratulations first of all. Contact us to upgrade your licence. You pay only the difference between tiers. Do this before you hit the limit, not after.
Can two artists use the same leased beat?
Yes. Non-exclusive leases are available to multiple buyers simultaneously. If you want to be the only person who can use a beat, purchase Exclusive Rights.
I want a beat that's not in the store. What do I do?

Do I own the copyright to my vocals / lyrics on a leased beat?
Yes. You own the copyright to your vocal performance and any original lyrics or melodies you record. The Producer retains copyright over the underlying instrumental. This is standard in the music industry.
